One of Sabi Sand's most charming lodges

Exeter River Lodge, Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve

The view from Exeter River Lodge overlooking the Sand River. The view from Exeter River Lodge overlooking the Sand River.

Exeter River Lodge belongs to the prestigious &Beyond group so it’s no surprise that it fulfills all the requirements for a top safari lodge: the Big 5 plus abundant other game and birds, gorgeous accommodation and one of the best river views in Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

Did you know?

You'll be traversing 10 000ha of wilderness on your daily morning and evening game drives.

Expect all the components of a top safari lodge when you choose Exeter River Lodge. The Big 5 are all here, including some of the best opportunities in South Africa for leopard sightings, plus gorgeous accommodation and exceptional service.

Exeter River Lodge has managed to escape the much-publicised reputations of some of the other Sabi Sand Game Reserve private lodges, although it offers just what they offer but in a quieter, less glitzy way.

You'll stay in 1 of 8 spacious stone and thatch suites overlooking the Sand River. On a hot day, dive in your personal plunge pool after the morning drive and then watch the passing show of game and birds from your huge wrap-around wooden viewing deck.

Inside your suite, dark honey-coloured stone walls and polished cement floors complement the earth tones of the comfy sofa and armchairs with their plump inviting cushions.

Handmade tables in dark wood, arresting photographs of game, small artefacts and interesting lamps all add to the genuine Out of Africa feel.

The main lodge where you’ll dine continues the theme with hand-carved wooden tables, wooden bottles and bowls and a chandelier made out of faux antelope horns.

Before the evening game drive, High Tea on the deck under the sausage tree is a highlight – not just for the food and the view, but also for when the sausage tree is in bloom in early summer, filled with iridescent sunbirds sipping nectar from the brilliant scarlet blossoms.

Game is abundant here. Expect to see the Big 5 but ask especially for a leopard sighting or 2. To see these spectacular cats by spotlight, prowling through the gathering darkness or guarding their kill high up on the thick branch of an ancient riverine tree, is something you will never forget.
